North Valley qualifies five for nationals
North Valley sends several members to nationals in July
By Aileen McAteer

The North Valley Rodeo team has an Oregon state champion in Cow Cutting and will be sending four other members to nationals in Barrel Racing and Bull Riding.

Austin Woods, a sophomore from Newberg, garnered a 131-point first round in Klamath Falls Oregon state competition June 18 through the 21.

Woods started fourth out of five places but cruised into first place during the second round with 138 points, one point more than second place cow cutter RC Landingham’s 137 points.

In the final round, Woods solidified the top spot with 140 points.

“State went real good, and I think the club members did awesome,” said NVR team advisor Laurie Meng.

“We have three cow cutters going to nationals.”

Max Hotchkiss, a senior from Oregon City, qualified for nationals, garnering 140 points for second place in the first round, 129 points for fourth place in the second round and bounced back in the final round with 137 points for second place to punch his ticket to nationals.

Kristin Woods, a senior from Newberg won a trip to nationals in Cow Cutting riding the same horse as her brother, Austin Woods, Meng said.

Kristin Woods had a sixth place finish in the first round with 130 points followed by a second round first place finish with 142 points. In her final round, she collected 130 points for an overall second place finish, keeping in line with her ranking as second in state. She took Girls Reserve Champion.

“Rachell Stoller had a great state finals, winning the second round, and is headed back to Nationals,” Meng said.

Stoller, a senior from Canby, won the second round of Barrel Racing in a time of 16.842 seconds and just a hair above Lacy Egli who finished in 16.926 seconds.

Stoller then clinched the final round in 16.905 seconds.

Out of the four who qualified from the NVR team in Bull Riding- freshman Brandon Balcom from Mulino, junior Tyler Smith from Colton, Molalla sophomore Ben Eastman and sophomore Mike Block from Perrydale, Block is the lone qualifier for nationals and also qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in Steer Wrestling.

Block will be joining teammate and Molalla sophomore Jake Gibson for Tie Down Roping at Silver State.

“Gibson is going to Silverstate in Tie Down for his first time, and he had a real good year too,” Meng said.

“Mickie Meng had two really great runs at state, but due to allergies her horse wasn’t up to par most of the season and she didn’t go in to state with enough points to continue on although she has made it to Silver State International Rodeo the past three years. All in all the team should be proud. I know I am. It was very bitter sweet for many of the seniors. But we will be seeing some of them in the pro’s. Rachel Stoller will run in Molalla and St. Paul, during the 4th of July. Mickie is seasoning her new horse and will attempt the pro’s in the future.”

The national competition will be held July 17 through July 26 in Farmington, N.M.
