Mulino News for Nov. 25, 2009 - Mulino resident departs for two-year mission

Farewell open house
The evening of Nov. 15 found many people in the community gathering at the home of Jim and Sandy Bever in Mulino to say goodbye to their son Thomas. He is leaving for two years to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in El Salvador and Belize.

On Nov. 16 Thomas boarded an airplane to Salt Lake City, where he will enter the Missionary Training Center. The next two months will be filled with learning to speak the Spanish language and learning the customs of the countries where he will be serving.

After that, he will get on a plane and head for Central America and begin his great adventure by total immersion into his assigned community.

Good luck, Thomas. Represent Mulino well and we’ll look forward to seeing you in two years.

Pizza, anyone?
Last Friday night I had a horrible experience driving home at rush hour. It was in the dark, in my son’s car, which was on the verge of having its clutch go out.

I never even learned to drive a stick shift until I was 35 and don’t do it very often, even now. The point of my driving it home was so my husband could put in a new clutch.

I stopped on Highway 213 to turn left on Graves Road and could not get the car into first gear again. It didn’t take long for traffic to start backing up, and the harder I tried to get the car to go, the worse it got.

Finally, I turned on the emergency blinkers and it became apparent to everyone backed up behind me that the only way anyone was going to get home was to get me off the road.

Fortunately, a couple of very nice men pushed me off onto the side street and out of the flow of traffic. I called my husband to come rescue me. Of course, he got in the car and was able to get it into gear (sort of); he drives a semi for a living, so clutches and gear shifts are all in a day’s work for him.

Our plans for the evening were to go to the play at the high school, but by the time we got home, I was cold, frustrated and rattled, so my husband decided to take me out to dinner at the Mulino Café. We sat and enjoyed a leisurely dinner and had a nice conversation with the owner, Ed.

It was then that Ed told us that he now offered takeout pizza. I was so happy to hear this, as several times a month we find ourselves in need of a quick fix for dinner and our solution is often to call in a pizza order. If you are having one of those days, you can call ahead at 503-829-7555 and they will have your pizza ready for you to pick up on your way home.

It has been a long time since Mulino has had this convenience available, so remember this when the day gets away from you and you are wondering what to have for dinner.

We were able to go to the play the next night, which was the closing night, and it was so fun. The kids in the cast even hit their director, Mr. Hall, in the face with a pie.

Cub Scout salute
Nov. 9 was the monthly pack meeting of the Mulino Cub Scouts. They had the event at the Molalla Moose Lodge and called it “Cub Scout Salute.”

It was an evening set aside to honor the boys’ heroes. Some of their heroes were invited to come and enjoy the evening with them. Several men from Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) came and were joined by fireman David Aasland and scout leader Jon Pritchard. The Cub Scouts honored each of these men and gave them a small flag.

During the den showcase part of the evening, one of the scouting parents found seven more veterans in the Moose Lodge’s bar area and invited them to come and join the festivities. The group discovered that every branch of the military was represented by the veterans in attendance. They all joined in with the Cub Scouts in a robust rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The boys also collected 250 pounds of food to donate to local people in need.
