The Jewell Blue Jays suffered a Mother Nature inspired extermination at the hands of the Country Christian Cougars Friday afternoon.

The Cougars outscored the Blue Jays 72-22 during their first home game of the season.

At halftime time the Cougars, tired and worn out due to a lack of substitutes because of injuries, had only two players rotating in from the bench. Just before halftime Zack Satrum was hurt during a sideline play, leaving the Cougars with only one substitute for the remainder of the game. Despite the lack of fresh players Country Christian was ahead 50-16.

“We have to be mentally tough,” Head Coach Jay Warrington told his team during the break. “You’re going to be tired in the second half, they have guys to put in but we don’t.”

The pep talk was enough to rally the players and during the third quarter Mark Christenson crossed the endzone to bring the score to 64-16. The two point conversion was good, giving the Cougars more than a 45 point lead.

At that point the mercy rule was put into motion, that the clock can only be stopped for the remainder of the game during time-outs and injuries, if a team is more than 45 points ahead.

Even though the team was exhausted and missing Stephen Christenson, their leading rusher, they were still able to score one last time before they game was over.

Cameron Egger and Satrum each scored three touchdowns, Dawson Nofziger crossed the endzone twice and Mark Christenson and Jeremy Urland each put up six points on the scoreboard.

The Cougars will face their biggest rivals, the undefeated St. Paul Buckaroos, at home Oct. 23 at 3 p.m.
